Insurance adjusting is an important job in the insurance industry, as adjusters help insurance companies assess claims and provide policyholders with the compensation they are entitled to.
Types of Adjusters
There are two main types of adjusters: independent and staff. Independent adjusters are not employees of any particular company; instead, they travel around to investigate property damage, interview witnesses and claimants, negotiate settlements between parties involved in a claim, and evaluate losses. Staff adjusters work for a specific insurer and have more regular hours, but still have many of the same responsibilities as an independent adjuster.
So, how do you become an insurance adjuster?
Licenses Required for Adjusting
Most states require that all claims professionals have a license to practice adjusting. Licensing requirements vary from state to state, but typically need applicants to pass exams and/or provide criminal background information. In some states, such as Texas, applicants must go through a training program before taking the exam, while other states such as California require only certain types of claims to be adjusted by licensed professionals. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners offers a list of each state’s licensing requirements on its website.
Options for Obtaining Licenses
The most common way to obtain a license is through online or classroom-based licensing courses offered by various education providers that prepare you for the exam. The primary advantage is that the course provides you with more information than merely studying for an exam and in some states, the course waives the state exam requirement. Certified licensing courses must contain 40 hours of material. It’s important to note, though, that not all licensing courses are created equal. While all certified courses fulfill the criteria to apply for your adjuster license, not all of them will adequately equip you to work as an adjuster. Insurance companies are expecting you to be productive the moment you start work. The more prepared you are to jump into claims handling situations, the more desirable you will be as a candidate for employment and the more valuable you will be as an employee. The course that you choose to secure your license can make all the difference in your success as an adjuster.
