Learning Objectives

Upon completing the National Workers’ Compensation Claims Management Training Program, students will gain a comprehensive set of skills and knowledge, enabling them to:

• Grasp the Historical Context and Evolution of Workers’ Compensation: Understand the origins of the U.S. Workers’ Compensation industry, its development as “the Grand Bargain: between business and labor over the last century, the challenges it has faced, and its current state as a blend of private contract and social legislation.
• Master Compensability Doctrines: Learn to accurately identify and apply key legal doctrines that determine the compensability of workers’ compensation claims
• Calculate and Understand Workers’ Compensation Benefits: Determine the primary benefits an injured worker is entitled to, including the duration and termination of those benefits
• Identify Occupational Injuries and Medical Conditions: Recognize injuries and medical conditions commonly seen in workplace injuries, understand their causes, the types of treatment available, and the providers of such treatments
• Evaluate and Reserve Financial Exposures: Learn the principles of evaluating and reserving for financial exposures stemming from occupational injuries, and how to analyze and present the value of a workers’ compensation claim
• Understand the Insurance Product’s Ecosystem: Gain insights into how experience rating, underwriting analysis, occupational injury and financial loss, financial reserving, and the settlement and elimination of loss exposures interact and affect the workers’ compensation insurance product
